Privacy Policy

Your trust is the foundation of BasKaro. We understand the sensitive nature of the information you share with us, and we are absolutely committed to protecting your privacy while working to achieve our mission: to combat the normalized dehumanization and racism against Indians worldwide. This page explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights concerning your data.

1. Information We Collect (and What We DON'T)

  • Incident Reports: When you submit a report, we collect the details you provide about the racist incident. This includes:
    • Your description of the event.
    • The type of incident (e.g., online hate, verbal abuse, discrimination).
    • Date and time of the incident.
    • Location details (e.g., city, country, or online platform).
    • Uploaded evidence (images, videos) related to the incident.
    • Perpetrator descriptions (if provided and anonymized).
  • Anonymity for Standard Reports: For all standard reports where you do not optionally provide an email, we do not collect any Personal Identifiable Information (PII) about you, the reporter. We do not track IP addresses for these public reports, and we never ask for your name or other personal contact details for anonymous submissions.
  • Optional Email for Report Notifications: If you choose to provide your email address when submitting a report, we collect it for the sole purpose of sending you a one-time notification with a direct link to your report once it has been approved and published on our "Reports" feed.
    • This feature is entirely optional.
    • We will never use this email address for any other purpose, such as marketing, newsletters, or any form of unsolicited contact.
    • Your email address, if provided, is stored securely alongside the incident report data and is subject to the same protection measures outlined in this policy.
    • We will not share this email address with any third parties.
  • Technical Data: Like most websites, we collect anonymous usage data (e.g., pages visited, time spent) to understand how our site is used and to improve its functionality. This data is aggregated and cannot be used to identify individual users.

2. How We Use Your Information

The information you provide is crucial to our mission. We use it to:

  • Build the Database: Your incident report contributes to our extensive database, creating a comprehensive record of anti-Indian racism.
  • Power Our AI: Anonymized and processed incident data is used to train our Indian-made LLM, helping it understand and counter racist narratives online.
  • Fuel Advocacy: Aggregated, anonymized data allows us to generate powerful reports and insights to influence governments, social media platforms, and other organizations.
  • Inform Our Community: Processed data helps us identify trends, types of aggression, and effective counter-strategies, which we share to help all Indians become more aware and resilient.
  • Improve Our Services: We analyze usage data to enhance the BasKaro web app and make reporting easier and more impactful.
  • Verification: Human moderators review reports to ensure accuracy, adherence to our guidelines, and ethical display before they appear on the main feed.
  • Report Notification (If Email Provided): If you optionally provide your email address, we use it once to send you a notification with a link to your published report. This is its only use.

3. How We Store & Protect Your Information

  • We use a secure Firebase backend to store all data documents and uploaded files, including any optionally provided email addresses.
  • All data, especially sensitive evidence and email addresses, is handled with robust security measures and encryption.
  • We prioritize anonymization for public display. If you do not provide an email, your report is fully anonymous. If an email is provided for notification, it is not publicly displayed and is used solely for the notification purpose.

4. Sharing Your Information

  • We will never share your personal identifying information, including any optionally provided email address, with any third party for marketing or unrelated purposes.
  • We only share aggregated and fully anonymized data in public reports, statistical analyses, or with partner organizations. This means no individual report can be traced back to you personally.
  • Our AI processing involves services configured to process data ethically and securely, without retaining identifying information or compromising your privacy.

5. Your Rights

  • Right to Awareness: This Privacy Policy serves to inform you about how your data is handled.
  • Right to Object (for Public Posts): If a public post of yours (e.g., a social media comment) is featured on our site as part of a racist incident report, and you object to its inclusion, we are always willing to cooperate in removing it at your behest.
  • Data Pertaining to Optional Email Notification: If you provided an email for notification, you have the right to request its deletion from our records after you have received your notification. Please contact us at info@baskaro.org with the approximate date and details of your report submission. While we will make best efforts to locate and delete your email, extensive historical searches for very old, unidentifiable reports might be limited.
  • Limitations on Access/Deletion for Anonymous Reports: Due to our commitment to 100% anonymity for reports submitted without an email, we do not link these reports to individual users. This means we cannot fulfill requests for individual access, modification, or deletion of specific anonymous reports, as we have no way to verify your identity as the original submitter of that particular report.

6. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
